Women's 60+ Hockey Qualifiers for Kamloops 2020

December 6th and 7th, four teams from Mississauga, Napanee, Kemptville, and Hamilton/Wentworth descended on the tiny community of Warsaw to take to the ice and compete for the 2 Ontario spots in the 60+ women's hockey division at the 2020 Kamloops Canada Games.

First game was a thriller with Mississauga taking on Napanee. End of regulation saw a tie 1 - 1 with no change in overtime. In the shoot out that followed, Mississauga came through to take the game 2-1. This was the start of something spectacular.

The second game of the day saw Kemptville shut out Hamilton 2 - 0 in another closely contested game.

In Mississauga's next game, their skillful skating and deft stick handling netted them an impressive 5 - 0 win over Kemptville.

Fourth and final game of the first day saw Hamilton pepper Napanee 4 - 1.

Second day of the tournament and the final 2 games were on tap. Only Mississauga had secured 1 of the 2 spots to represent Ontario at the 2020 Canada Games. It was anyone's opportunity to win the final spot.

The first game of the day saw Kemptville taking on Napanee. Kemptville came out flying, scoring the first goal to lead 1-0. Not to be outdone, Napanee fought back to tie the game. With minutes remaining, Napanee flipped out a pass from behind the net which was skillfully tapped in to end the game 2 - 1 in Napanee's favour. Kemptville's hopes were dashed. Napanee had to wait for the final game to see if they were going on to represent Ontario or not.

A tie or a win by Hamilton/Wentworth against Mississauga would slip them past Napanee as Ontario's second place team. It was a nail biter!

Hamiton/Wentworth came out flying, determined to give Mississauga everything they had. The action raced from end to end, neither team scoring a goal. The Napanee team held their breath, waiting for the goal that would dash their hopes or win them their ticket to Kamloops. Then, it happened, the talent and relentless power of Mississauga netted the puck, 1-0 was the final score. Mississauga continued their dominance.

The Mississauga Legends won all 3 of their games, scoring a total of 8 goals while limiting their opponents to only 2 goals. Hamilton's hopes were dashed with their 1 - 0 loss in the final game. Napanee secured the second spot as Team Ontario reps for the Kamloops Canada Games 2020.

It was a great tournament with many exciting moments. Ontario will be well represented by the Mississauga Legends and Napanee.

Many thanks to the team organizers Pat Deane, Patricia Weese, Norie Spence, and Laura Reeves who inspire their teams to play great hockey.
